Hydrogeological Modeling

As part of research and development (R&D), Terrapex supports the integration of digital analysis tools for the comprehensive interpretation of data collected over the course of laboratory and field work. It is within this context that the company has acquired hydrogeological modeling software.

Hydrogeological modeling allows for the simulation of groundwater flow and contaminant migration in the study area. This in turn helps Terrapex design treatment systems for soil and groundwater contaminated with hydrocarbons, by determining the most appropriate places to install pumping and/or injection wells and flow rates.

In the context of environmental remediation projects, hydrogeological modeling integrates geological and hydrogeological data collected from the field and laboratory and is used to test groundwater flow and contaminant transport hypotheses from previous studies.

One of the tools employed by Terrapex is the Visual Modflow Pro interface developed by Waterloo Hydrogeologic Inc. This interface includes Modflow software, developed by McDonald and Harbaugh in 1988, which simulates groundwater flow in saturated conditions in three dimensions. Visual Modflow Pro includes several other programs such as PEST, MODPATH, MT3DMS and RT3D. These applications allow for the calibration of the model and simulate groundwater flow trajectories and the transport, desorption and degradation of contaminants.
