Hydrogeology and Groundwater Management

Hydrogeology is the scientific study of groundwater based on geological conditions. Groundwater is a primary source of potable water, and the responsible management of groundwater resources is everyone’s business. Due to continuous movement and surface water resurgence potential, the impact of groundwater quality can be seen at both local and regional levels. In addition, groundwater is vulnerable to anthropogenic contamination.

Certain hydrogeological services can be introduced to complement environmental or geotechnical studies. Terrapex’s professional team offers versatile support via an array of distinct hydrogeological services to handle the various issues associated with this valuable resource:

Groundwater Supply

  • Technical expertise regarding the installation of drinking water wells pursuant to Article 17 of the Règlement sur le prélèvement des eaux et leur protection (“Water Withdrawal and Protection Regulation”);
  • Professional supervision of well and encompassing watertight flange installation;
  • Analysis of potable water supply vulnerability and DRASTIC Index calculation;
  • Analysis of pump tests.

Environment

  • Groundwater quality assessment and monitoring in compliance with applicable environmental standards;
  • Analysis of aquifer vulnerability and DRASTIC Index calculation;
  • Hydrogeological study for the storage or disposal of contaminants;
  • Contaminated groundwater plume assessment and delineation.

Management and Treatment of Contaminated Water

  • Hydraulic control to limit contaminant migration;
  • Recovery and treatment system for contaminated groundwater and free phase product (mobile treatment unit or permanent system);
  • Filtration marshes and other passive treatment systems.

Data Modelling

  • 3D hydrogeological flow simulation as a design planning and optimization tool for groundwater collection systems;
  • Groundwater contaminant transport simulation for the development of contaminant recovery systems and as a tool to assess the potential extent of contamination.

Groundwater Management During Excavation Work

  • Assessment of groundwater flow rates to be managed for dewatering;
  • Assessment and monitoring of excavation water quality in compliance with applicable environmental standards;
  • Treatment of contaminated water (mobile treatment unit or permanent system).
